ESB Networks status

ESB Networks is the vital, ring-fenced subsidiary of the Electricity Supply Board (ESB) Group, functioning as the licensed operator for the electricity distribution system across the Republic of Ireland. ESB itself is majority-owned by the Irish Government (approximately 97%), making ESB Networks a key state-owned utility responsible for the nation’s electrical infrastructure. Its core mandate is to finance, build, maintain, and safely operate the vast national electricity network, which includes over 155,000 km of overhead lines and 23,500 km of underground cables, connecting more than 2.3 million customers in homes, farms, and businesses. ESB Networks holds the licenses for the Distribution System Operator (DSO), the Distribution Asset Owner (DAO), and the onshore Transmission Asset Owner (TAO), meaning it manages all the infrastructure from bulk supply points right to the customer’s meter. Key targets for the network development by 2030 include connecting up to 22 GW of renewable generation, enabling one million electric vehicles (EVs), and connecting 680,000 heat pumps to the distribution system. A flagship project underpinning this transformation is the national Smart Meter Programme, an essential upgrade replacing traditional meters with digital smart meters. Over two million smart meters have now been installed, providing significant benefits like automated, accurate meter readings, which greatly reduces the need for estimated bills. Crucially, these meters record detailed time-of-use consumption data, enabling electricity suppliers to offer smart tariffs that incentivise customers to shift usage away from peak times (typically 5 pm to 7 pm), thus managing peak demand on the network. They also empower customers with access to their energy usage insights via the ESB Networks Online Account and facilitate microgeneration export payments for those who generate their own electricity, such as with solar panels. Services offered by ESB Networks include connecting new customers, modifying existing lines, managing power outages, and maintaining the system's overall safety and integrity.
