Estado de Alabama Rural Electric Association

Area Power Cooperative is a utility provider that operates on a unique cooperative business model, meaning it is owned by the members it serves. Unlike investor-owned utilities that aim to maximize profits for shareholders, Area Power Cooperative's primary purpose is to provide reliable and affordable electricity to its members. Its history is rooted in the movement to bring electricity to rural areas that were deemed too expensive for for-profit companies to serve. This model ensures that all revenue beyond operating costs is either invested back into the infrastructure or returned to members in the form of capital credits. The company's services include providing electricity for residential, agricultural, and commercial use. It also often offers a variety of energy-related services, such as energy efficiency programs, rebates for certain appliances, and support for renewable energy projects. A key part of its value proposition is the focus on community and member engagement. Members have a voice in the cooperative's governance through voting for the board of directors, which is composed of fellow members. This direct democratic control is a significant differentiator. The company's revenue is generated from the sale of electricity to its members. Its pricing strategy is designed to cover operational costs while remaining competitive.
