Fox News Channel, commonly known as Fox News, is an American multinational conservative news and political commentary television channel and website. It is owned by Fox News Media, a subsidiary of Fox Corporation, and is headquartered in New York City. The channel was founded by media mogul Rupert Murdoch in 1996 with a stated aim to provide a more conservative alternative to the mainstream news landscape. This focus has defined its identity and success. Fox News quickly grew to become the dominant United States cable news network, and as of 2023, it generated approximately 70% of its parent company's pre-tax profit, making its business model highly effective. Its business model is based on two primary revenue streams: affiliate fees and advertising. Cable and satellite providers pay the channel a fee to carry it, and the channel sells advertising slots during its broadcasts. This dual-revenue approach makes it highly profitable and resilient. The channel's programming is a mix of straight news reporting during the daytime and opinion and commentary-driven shows in the evenings. Its most well-known programs include The Five, Hannity, and Gutfeld!, each of which has attracted millions of viewers. Other notable shows include Special Report with Bret Baier and Fox & Friends. The channel's on-air personalities, such as Sean Hannity, Greg Gutfeld, and Jesse Watters, have become major figures in American media and political discourse. Fox News's influence on the American political landscape is a subject of significant debate. It has been described as a major force in boosting Republican turnout and has been a go-to source for conservative viewers. Its ratings consistently place it as the most-watched cable news network in the United States, often surpassing its competitors like MSNBC and CNN combined, and at times even outperforming major broadcast networks in primetime. The channel has also faced numerous controversies, including accusations of biased reporting and a high-profile defamation lawsuit regarding its coverage of the 2020 presidential election. Despite these challenges, Fox News has maintained its position as a powerful and influential voice, and its unique brand of news and commentary has cemented its place as a central component of the modern media ecosystem.
