Discovery+ is an American multinational subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) streaming service focused on factual and reality-based programming. It functions as the definitive streaming home for content drawn primarily from the massive libraries of Discovery Channel, Animal Planet, TLC, HGTV, Food Network, and Investigation Discovery (ID), among others. Launched initially in India in March 2020 and globally, including the U.S. in January 2021, the platform consolidates over 70,000 episodes of current and classic shows. It also features a growing library of Discovery+ Originals and content from partners like A&E Networks and NBCUniversal in some regions. Key content genres include a wealth of popular real-life entertainment like true crime, home improvement and lifestyle, food and cooking, relationships (notably the entire 90 Day Fiancé universe), paranormal, science, and natural history programming from sources like the BBC's Natural History Collection. It positions itself as the non-fiction counterpart to general entertainment streamers. The service offers two primary subscription tiers in the U.S.: a lower-cost ad-supported plan and a premium ad-free version. Accounts typically support up to five user profiles and four concurrent streams, making it a family-friendly option. The ad-free tier also allows for offline downloads on mobile devices. The streaming service is owned by Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD), formed by the merger of Discovery, Inc. and WarnerMedia in 2022. Post-merger, WBD integrated much of the Discovery library into its flagship service, Max (formerly HBO Max), particularly in the U.S. and other markets. Despite the launch of Max, Discovery+ continues to operate as a standalone service in the U.S. and other international territories, often featuring a different content mix or sports offerings (such as TNT Sports content in certain European markets). Its future role and continued independence vary by region due to WBD's evolving global streaming strategy. The primary goal of Discovery+ remains to serve as the definitive destination for unscripted, real-life entertainment for a dedicated fan base.
