RCN status

RCN, originally standing for Residential Communications Network, is a telecommunications company that is now a part of Astound Broadband. Its business model is based on providing a "triple-play" of services including high-speed internet, digital television, and phone services, primarily over its own hybrid fiber-coaxial network. Unlike many of its competitors, RCN has historically been a "overbuilder", meaning it has built its own network in areas that already had established cable and telecom providers. This strategy has allowed it to compete on price, performance, and customer service. RCN is known for its competitive pricing, especially its introductory offers, and its flexible, no-contract plans, which give customers the freedom to cancel or change their service without incurring an early termination fee. This flexibility is a major selling point in a market often dominated by long-term contracts. The company's service area is strategically focused on dense metropolitan areas in the United States, including Boston, Chicago, New York City, and Washington, D.C. This focus allows it to maximize the efficiency of its fiber-rich network. A significant part of its value proposition is its commitment to providing unlimited data on its internet plans, which is a key differentiator from some larger competitors that impose data caps and overage fees. In 2022, RCN and its sister companies Grande Communications and Wave Broadband were rebranded under the umbrella of Astound Broadband, though the legacy RCN name is still widely used in its original markets.
