Zelle status

Zelle is a U.S.-based digital payments network that allows individuals to send and receive money directly between bank accounts, typically within minutes. Unlike some other peer-to-peer (P2P) payment services that require a separate app or digital wallet, Zelle is integrated into the online and mobile banking platforms of over 2,200 participating financial institutions, including many of the largest banks in the country. This integration means users can access the service directly through their existing bank’s app without needing to download a separate one. The service operates by linking a user’s email address or U.S. mobile phone number to their bank account. When a payment is sent, it goes from the sender's account to the recipient's account, provided both are enrolled with Zelle. This direct transfer model is a key feature, as the funds are not held in an intermediary account. This also means that, unlike some other services, there is no "Zelle balance" to manage. While Zelle is convenient and generally free for consumers, its security and transfer speed come with a crucial caveat: once a payment is sent to an enrolled user, it is difficult or impossible to reverse. Because it functions like a direct cash transfer, Zelle does not offer the same purchase protection as a credit card. For this reason, Zelle and its banking partners strongly advise that the service only be used for sending money to people you know and trust.
