Altibox status

Altibox AS is a prominent Norwegian telecommunications company and a key player in the Nordic fiber broadband market. It was originally founded in 2002 as Lyse Tele by the industrial group Lyse AS, which remains its full owner. Lyse is a large Norwegian utility group with deep roots in energy and infrastructure, leveraging that experience to become a leader in fiber-optic broadband. Altibox's core business model is a unique B2B Partnership model where it provides a unified brand and wholesale services to over 35 local Norwegian and 6 Danish FTTH networks. These local partners, many of which are regional energy companies, are responsible for the local network build-out, customer support, and sales, while Altibox supplies the central platform and product offerings. This structure has allowed Altibox to rapidly expand its fiber footprint across Norway and become one of the largest fiber-based telecom entities in the country, often holding a market share comparable to the incumbent operator, Telenor. The company offers a multi-play service bundle primarily centered on its Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) network. Its core services include high-speed fiber broadband with symmetrical upload and download speeds, digital TV (IPTV), and telephony (VoIP). The Altibox TV offering is a major product, featuring a modern user experience with super-aggregation of streaming services like Netflix and HBO, and a wide array of over 150 TV channels. In recent years, Altibox has strategically expanded its network and product portfolio, demonstrating its commitment to being a convergent operator. In a significant move, the parent company Lyse acquired the mobile operator ICE (Ice Communication Norge AS), allowing Altibox to enter the mobile telephony market as well. This acquisition positions Altibox as one of the few operators in Norway capable of offering a full suite of fixed and mobile communications services. Furthermore, Altibox, through its subsidiary Altibox Carrier, owns and operates a substantial international fiber infrastructure. This includes ownership of key subsea cables like the NO-UK cable connecting Norway to Newcastle in the UK, and the Skagenfiber cable linking Norway to Denmark and onward to major European digital hubs like Hamburg, Amsterdam, and London. These high-capacity cables support global data center, cloud service, and telecom carriers, positioning Norway as an increasingly important digital host nation. Altibox’s success is largely attributed to its focus on providing high-speed, stable connectivity and achieving one of the highest customer satisfaction (NPS) scores in the Norwegian telecom market year after year.
