Baidu — status

Often called "China’s Google," Baidu.com is the dominant search engine in the world’s largest internet market. Founded in 2000 by Robin Li, Baidu has expanded far beyond search to become a comprehensive AI and tech powerhouse, offering services like maps, cloud computing, autonomous driving, and smart assistants. Baidu processes billions of queries daily, tailoring results to China’s strict internet regulations while integrating localized features like Baidu Baike (a Wikipedia-like encyclopedia) and Baidu Tieba (a popular forum platform). Its AI division, Baidu Research, drives innovations in deep learning, natural language processing, and its Ernie chatbot, positioning the company at the forefront of China’s AI race. Beyond search, Baidu invests heavily in autonomous vehicles through its Apollo project and leads in smart speaker sales with Xiaodu. However, it faces challenges like government oversight, competition from Alibaba and Tencent, and global skepticism over data practices. As China’s digital economy grows, Baidu remains a critical player—bridging search, AI, and next-gen tech while navigating the complexities of its home market. Its evolution reflects China’s ambitions in the global tech landscape.
