Desjardins status

Desjardins Group is a Canadian financial services cooperative and the largest federation of credit unions in North America. Its business model is fundamentally different from a traditional bank because it is owned by its members, not by shareholders. This cooperative structure, or caisse populaire, means that instead of prioritizing profit for shareholders, its primary focus is on the financial and social well-being of its members and the communities it serves. The company's history began in 1900, founded by Alphonse Desjardins in Lévis, Quebec, as a response to usurious lending practices that were prevalent at the time. He sought to create a system that would provide fair credit and promote savings for the working class and rural communities. This founding principle of mutual aid and community support remains at the core of Desjardins' operations. A member-owned structure also means that profits, or "surplus earnings," can be redistributed to members in the form of "member dividends," which are paid out in proportion to a member's use of the cooperative's services. Additionally, a portion of these earnings is invested back into local community projects. Desjardins offers a full range of financial services, including personal and business banking, credit cards, mortgages, and loans. Beyond banking, it has expanded to provide insurance (life, health, and property and casualty), wealth management, and securities brokerage. These services are offered through its various subsidiaries and are a key part of its diversified revenue streams. Desjardins' revenue is generated from both net interest income on its loan portfolio and non-interest income from fees and commissions on its insurance and wealth management products. Its global presence, with a strong focus on the Americas, also contributes to its diversified earnings.
