DeviantArt — status

DeviantArt is a large online community and social network for artists and art enthusiasts. Its business model is a hybrid of a social network and a creative marketplace, offering both free services and premium paid features. A core part of its mission, since its founding in 2000, has been to provide a platform for creators of all skill levels, from amateurs to professionals, to showcase and share their artwork. The site's content ranges from traditional art, such as painting and sculpture, to digital art, photography, fan art, and literature. DeviantArt's revenue is generated through a variety of streams. The main source is its Core Membership, a subscription service that offers users additional benefits like ad-free browsing, advanced profile customization, and access to more tools for selling art. Other revenue streams include commissions on sales from its marketplace where artists can sell prints, digital downloads, and other merchandise, as well as advertising and brand partnerships. The platform also has its own internal currency called DeviantArt Points that users can use to tip artists or purchase digital content. A key feature of DeviantArt is its strong emphasis on community. Users, known as "deviants," can follow artists, leave comments and critiques on submissions (called "deviations"), and join "Groups" to connect with others who share specific interests. This community-centric approach, which includes forums and contests, helps artists build a personal brand and receive feedback. The company was acquired by Wix.com in 2017, which has led to a major redesign of the site to a more modern interface, known as "Eclipse," and the integration of new features for monetization. DeviantArt has played a significant role in the rise of user-generated content and has enabled many emerging artists to gain exposure and even earn a living from their work without relying on traditional galleries. This video discusses the history and evolution of the DeviantArt platform.
