Itch.Io — status

Itch.io is a website and digital storefront that serves as an open marketplace for independent video games and other digital content. Its business model is notable for its "pay-what-you-want" pricing and "open revenue sharing" model, which gives creators a significant degree of control over their sales. The platform was launched in March 2013 by Leaf Corcoran as a more accessible alternative to larger, more restrictive storefronts like Steam. Its history is rooted in a desire to provide a more open and artist-friendly space for creators to distribute their work. Unlike many other platforms that take a fixed 30% commission, Itch.io allows creators to set their own revenue share percentage, which can be as low as 0%. This flexibility has made it a favorite among indie developers and hobbyists. Itch.io is a common platform for small and experimental games that may not meet the commercial standards of other marketplaces, and it has become a hub for game jams, which are events where participants create games within a short timeframe. The platform’s audience tends to be more indie-centric, but it’s a crucial "stepping-stone" for many developers who eventually move on to larger platforms like Steam. In addition to games, Itch.io also hosts a wide range of other digital goods, including comics, zines, tabletop RPGs, and game assets. The website allows creators to fully customize their store pages, providing a unique space for each product. The platform's commitment to supporting creators and fostering a creative community has made it a vital part of the modern indie game development scene.
