PokerStars — status

PokerStars is the world's largest online poker cardroom, founded in 2001 and currently a subsidiary of the global gambling company Flutter Entertainment. The platform's business model is primarily based on rake and tournament fees. Rake is a small percentage of the pot in cash games that the house takes as its fee, while tournament fees are a fixed charge for players to enter a tournament. This model allows PokerStars to generate revenue from the sheer volume of games played on its platform without needing to bet against its players. The company has a massive global presence, with a downloadable poker client available for Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS, allowing millions of players to compete in real money games and tournaments 24/7. PokerStars offers a wide variety of poker games beyond the popular Texas Hold 'em, including Omaha, Stud, Razz, and mixed games. A key part of its appeal is its extensive tournament schedule, which includes the famous Sunday Million with a guaranteed $1 million prize pool, and major online tournament series like the World Championship of Online Poker (WCOOP) and the Spring Championship of Online Poker (SCOOP). Beyond poker, the company has expanded its offerings to include online casino games and sports betting, diversifying its revenue streams. The platform is also known for its innovative software and features, such as Zoom Poker, a fast-fold format that allows players to play more hands per hour, and the PokerStars Rewards loyalty program that gives players cash rewards and other benefits based on their play volume. The company's history is marked by its rapid rise to dominance after the 2003 World Series of Poker victory by Chris Moneymaker, who won his entry to the event via an online satellite tournament on PokerStars. The company's resilience through regulatory challenges, like the U.S. "Black Friday" in 2011, and its eventual acquisition by Flutter Entertainment, have cemented its position as a major force in the global online gambling industry. Its focus on providing a secure, reliable, and fair platform with a wide selection of games and tournaments has made it the market leader.
