Spirit Airlines is an American ultra-low-cost carrier headquartered in Dania Beach, Florida. Established in 1983 as Charter One and renamed Spirit Airlines in 1992, the airline operates scheduled flights throughout the United States, the Caribbean, and Latin America. Spirit's business model focuses on providing affordable travel options by offering unbundled fares, allowing passengers to pay only for the services they choose, such as seat selection, baggage, and refreshments. This approach enables Spirit to maintain low base fares while generating additional revenue through ancillary services. The airline operates an all-Airbus fleet, including A319, A320, and A321 aircraft, known as its "Fit Fleet," which is recognized as one of the youngest and most fuel-efficient in the U.S. Spirit serves over 60 destinations and is the largest ultra-low-cost carrier in North America. In recent years, Spirit has faced financial challenges, including filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy twice within a year due to declining cash reserves and escalating losses. As part of its restructuring efforts, the airline announced plans to furlough approximately 1,800 flight attendants and suspend 40 routes starting in November 2025.
