Wix — status

Wix is a website development platform that allows users to create and manage professional websites and online stores without any coding skills. Its business model is a freemium model, meaning it offers a free basic plan to attract a wide user base, while its revenue is primarily generated from premium subscriptions that unlock advanced features. The company was founded in 2006 by Israeli developers Avishai Abrahami, Nadav Abrahami, and Giora Kaplan. Its history began with a website builder based on Adobe Flash, which was later replaced by a more modern HTML5 editor that is now known for its drag-and-drop interface. This intuitive editor is a key part of its value proposition, as it gives users complete creative freedom to place elements anywhere on a page, a feature that distinguishes it from competitors like Squarespace, which uses a more rigid, template-based structure. In addition to its website builder, Wix offers a vast ecosystem of integrated business solutions, including e-commerce tools, a comprehensive marketing suite, and a variety of applications through its App Market. This allows users to add functionalities like online bookings, restaurant menus, and event registrations. The platform’s revenue streams are diverse, coming from its premium plans, e-commerce transaction fees, and commissions from third-party apps sold on its marketplace. The company also offers a suite of Artificial Design Intelligence (ADI) tools that automatically generate a personalized website based on a few simple questions from the user, further simplifying the creation process. While some users may outgrow Wix for more complex e-commerce needs, it remains a top choice for small businesses, freelancers, and creative professionals who prioritize design flexibility and ease of use.
