Wunderground — status

Weather Underground is a weather service that provides real-time weather information over the Internet. It offers weather reports for most major cities around the world on its website, as well as local weather reports for newspapers and third-party sites. The company collects data from over 250,000 personal weather stations worldwide, making it one of the largest networks of its kind. This extensive network allows for hyperlocal weather forecasts, providing users with detailed and accurate information for their specific locations. The platform's flagship feature is the WunderMap, an interactive map that overlays weather data from personal weather stations and official National Weather Service stations. Users can view current conditions, forecasts, and weather alerts in real-time. The map also provides various weather layers, such as radar, satellite imagery, and severe weather warnings, giving users a comprehensive view of the weather in their area. In addition to its weather maps, the service offers a range of tools and features for users. These include customizable weather widgets, mobile apps for iOS and Android devices, and integration with smart home devices. The platform also provides APIs for developers, allowing them to access weather data for use in their applications and services. The company was founded in 1995 as an offshoot of the University of Michigan internet weather database. The name "Weather Underground" was chosen as a reference to the 1960s radical left-wing militant organization, which also originated at the University of Michigan. Over the years, the company has evolved and expanded its services, becoming a trusted source for weather information. In 2016, Weather Underground was acquired by The Weather Company, which is a subsidiary of IBM. This acquisition has allowed the company to leverage IBM's resources and technology to enhance its services and reach a broader audience. Despite the acquisition, Weather Underground has maintained its commitment to providing accurate and localized weather information to its users. The company's mission is to make quality weather information available to every person on the planet, regardless of their location. By utilizing data from personal weather stations and official sources, Weather Underground aims to provide the most relevant and up-to-date weather information possible. This commitment to accuracy and accessibility has made it a valuable resource for individuals and organizations seeking reliable weather data. Whether you're planning a trip, managing an outdoor event, or simply curious about the weather in your area, Weather Underground offers a wealth of information to help you make informed decisions. With its user-friendly interface, extensive data network, and commitment to accuracy, it remains a leading provider of weather information online.
