BetMGM — status

BetMGM is a prominent sports betting and iGaming operator in the United States, established as a joint venture between MGM Resorts International and Entain plc. Its business model is centered on a digital-first approach, generating revenue through online sports wagers and casino games, complemented by a retail presence in MGM's physical casinos. The primary revenue stream comes from the "hold percentage," which is the amount of money retained by the sportsbook after all winning bets have been paid out, and from the house edge in its online casino games. This dual focus on both sports betting (sportsbook) and online casino (iGaming) gives BetMGM a broader market appeal than competitors focused on just one segment. The company's history is relatively recent but rapid. It was launched following the 2018 Supreme Court decision that struck down the federal ban on sports betting, paving the way for state-by-state legalization. The partnership between MGM, a major casino operator with extensive brand recognition and physical properties, and Entain, a global leader in sports betting technology and platform development, provided BetMGM with a formidable foundation. MGM provides the brand, the customer loyalty program (MGM Rewards), and the market access through its resorts, while Entain supplies the core proprietary technology and betting expertise. This combination is a key competitive advantage. BetMGM's services are delivered through a mobile app and website. The platform offers a wide array of betting options, including live in-game betting, parlays, and futures across major professional and collegiate sports. Its online casino offerings are vast, including slots, table games, and live dealer games, which are critical for revenue generation in states where iGaming is legal. The platform is known for its deep integration with the MGM Rewards program, allowing users to earn loyalty points from their online wagers that can be redeemed for hotel stays, dining, and entertainment at MGM resorts nationwide. This cross-channel loyalty program is a crucial differentiator and a powerful tool for customer retention. The company's strategy involves aggressive expansion into newly regulated states. It secures market access through deals with local casino operators, professional sports teams, or tribal entities, allowing it to legally offer its services. Its brand identity is sophisticated and premium, positioning itself as a high-quality, reliable, and entertaining platform. The continuous investment in its proprietary technology ensures a seamless user experience, making it one of the leading players in the highly competitive U.S. online gambling market.
