Venmo — status

Venmo is an American mobile payment service owned by PayPal that has become a cultural phenomenon, especially among millennials and Gen Z. Its business model is centered on a peer-to-peer (P2P) payments platform that allows users to easily send and receive money to friends and family. The core of Venmo's value proposition is its social feed, which displays a chronological list of transactions (without the amount) between users, often accompanied by emojis and short, witty descriptions. This social aspect differentiates it from traditional banking apps and other payment services. While it is often considered "free" for users, Venmo generates revenue primarily through fees on instant transfers to a bank account, a small fee for payments made with a credit card, and interchange fees from its debit card. The company also earns revenue from its business profiles, where it charges merchants a small fee for accepting Venmo as a form of payment. The history of Venmo dates back to 2009. After a brief acquisition by Braintree in 2012, it was acquired by PayPal as part of a larger deal in 2013. The venmo.com website serves as a landing page and informational hub, but its primary functionality lies within the mobile app, which is a digital wallet allowing users to link their bank accounts, credit cards, or debit cards to facilitate transactions. The app also offers a debit card and a secured credit card to expand its services beyond simple P2P transfers.
